An international colloquium gathering specialists in rotating electrical machines and power generation — the academic community, research institutes, manufacturers, utilities and industry. Hosted in Brazil, where large hydropower, an expanding fleet of synchronous compensators, flexible thermal generation and one of the world's largest wind portfolios share a single system.
CIGRE — the International Council on Large Electric Systems — was founded in Paris in 1921 and has spent more than a hundred years doing one thing: getting the people who design, build and operate power systems into the same room, and turning what they know into shared, documented engineering practice.
Today it is a global community of thousands of professionals from over 90 countries and around 1,250 member organisations, structured into 61 National Committees and 16 Study Committees. More than 250 Working Groups produce the Technical Brochures, Green Books and reference papers that much of the industry works from.
Study Committee A1 is the one that deals with rotating machines. Its scope covers all aspects of electromechanical energy conversion equipment — research, development, design, manufacture and testing, through commissioning, operation, condition assessment, maintenance, life extension, refurbishment, upgrades, efficiency improvement, conversion, storage and decommissioning.
Bringing the SC A1 International Colloquium to Brazil is a strategic opportunity for professionals and companies worldwide working with rotating electrical machines. The Brazilian power system combines, within a single environment, large hydropower plants, an expanding fleet of synchronous compensators, flexible thermal generation and one of the largest wind portfolios in the world — a highly relevant, contemporary setting for discussions on system stability, asset modernisation and the integration of renewable sources.
Hosted in Brazil, the event also promotes greater international integration and strengthens Latin American participation in global discussions. For companies, associating with the colloquium means strategic positioning before a highly qualified audience of technical decision-makers and industry leaders.
The International Colloquium of Study Committee A1 will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 09 to 13 August 2027, at the Windsor Barra Hotel. The city offers well-established infrastructure for international events, broad air connectivity and historical relevance in the Brazilian energy sector.
CIGRE Brasil, with the support of CIGRE Study Committee A1 — gathering specialists from the academic community, research institutes, original equipment manufacturers, electric utilities and the industrial world.

Windsor Barra Hotel. Located in Barra da Tijuca, it will host the International Colloquium. Its conference facilities, accommodation, dining and support services provide an integrated setting for a technical event with an international audience, supporting both the scientific program and informal networking.
The location also offers participants the opportunity to experience Rio de Janeiro during their stay, with access to well-known cultural, natural and leisure attractions throughout the city.
Rotating machines are a small world. The people who design them, the people who run them and the people who diagnose them rarely sit in the same session — this colloquium is built specifically so that they do.
Accepted papers are presented across the colloquium's technical sessions, structured around the three preferential subjects. Your work reaches the exact audience that can use it — not a general power-systems crowd.
OEM design engineers, utility asset managers, test laboratories and university researchers, in one venue and one room. Coffee breaks here routinely solve problems that email threads have been circling for months.
Real operating experience: stator winding failures, insulation ageing, bearing and cooling issues, rotor cracks. Case studies presented by the people who actually opened the machine and found out what happened.
SC A1 works directly on the adaptation of international standards for machine design and performance. Attending means hearing where the requirements are heading while there is still time to plan for them.
Synchronous compensators, variable-speed pumped storage, wind generators, SMR applications and the conversion of decommissioned generators into inertia providers. The transition seen from the shaft outwards, not from the policy paper down.
Friday 13 August is dedicated to two full-day optional technical visits — a chance to see installed plant and talk to operating staff, which is worth several conference sessions on its own. Delegates may join one of the two visits (not both). Visits are subject to minimum attendance and weather conditions.
CIGRE puts explicit weight on developing younger engineers through participation, and domestic students register at a reduced rate. The technical sessions give first-time presenters a real audience instead of a graveyard slot.
Favourable weather, broad air connectivity and a city with historical relevance in the Brazilian energy sector. A cocktail and a Networking Dinner keep the conversations going after the sessions end — which is where most of the value of a colloquium actually lives.
Monday 09 August is reserved for SC A1 AG/WG Meetings. The SC A1 General Meeting takes place Tuesday morning, followed by the Colloquium and Tutorials through Thursday, with technical visits on Friday. This programme is preliminary and subject to change.
Delegates may join one of the two technical visits above — it is not possible to attend both.
Registration opens in five categories, each with an early and a normal rate. Early registration applies to bookings confirmed up to 30 June 2027.

Around 120 delegates — technical decision-makers and key stakeholders in electromechanical energy conversion. Associating with the colloquium means strategic positioning before a highly qualified audience, reinforced technical credibility and concrete opportunities for partnerships and business development. Investment figures for each plan are sent on request.
